Choices, Choices: Saline Vs Silicone
There are several factors which a cosmetic surgeon will consider when advising you to choose between Silicone and Saline implants intended for breast augmentation. These factors include age, your level of concern over scaring, if it is a reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, whether or not you have previously had breast implants, and the amount of breast tissue you have naturally.
Silicone breast implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, because their size and volume are fixed. They are preferred by some women because they are filled with a gel substance rather than a liquid, so they have a texture more like natural breast tissue. However, the also, potentially pose a greater health risk because their deflation can go longer without notice. Should a rupture occur, the only solution is to remove the damaged implant and install a new one, they cannot be resealed or corrected. The FDA suggests that those who choose to have Silicone breast implants have them routinely scanned by MRI a minimum of every 24 months to insure that they do not have any leakage.
Saline breast implants are one size fits all. They are filled with saline solution to be completely made custom order. Some silicone implants even have the advantage of postoperative adjustment, this means that fluid can be added or removed to improve the breast enlargement anytime an adjustment is necessary. This is also the safer breast implant because a rupture becomes evident almost immediately. In most cases the implant can be repaired and refilled. The draw back to saline implants is that they generally feel firmer than a natural breast, and as a result may not only look less natural, but feel less comfortable
